flowers, cake, and a new online shop

First of all, for Jane, Flowers in the House. An opportunity for us all to stroll out into the garden in our best wellies, the cosy Orla Kiely ones with teacups on, and fling together a few effortless blossoms to display attractively in front of anything that will show us in a good light, lifestyle-wise.

Cornflower, Nepeta, Hydrangea, Calendula, Verbena. Do I have the right Monday?

I made reliable sponge cake for the visitors. 4 eggs, 4 oz flour, 4 oz sugar. Raspberry jam, cream.

The scene shifts to a determinedly minimalist corner of my house.  Golden yellow sofa, assorted cushions, accoutrements.

[from Natural Calico]

And if colour didn't creep so invitingly up on me, this is the state of grace my interiors would achieve: serenity epitomised by a contained quantity of stripes and the rustic chic of grainsack fabric.

I covet the ottoman, from Natural Calico, a new online home boutique set up by Marie, whom I met when she came to style my house for an Ideal Home photoshoot.  She and I remained in touch and I'm pleased to see her enterprising new venture.  I confidently told Marie that my readers would be particularly interested in washed wood herb planters: was I right?

  1. Totally the right Monday! And I'm going to take the liberty of linking you up as soon as I have a bite of cake and a nice visit on the cosy sofa.

Wait, I'm here for the flowers... beautiful. I had forgotten about calendula. I love it's scent and color.

Aren't we all glad you decided to garden.

  3. I love your bright and sunny colors, in house and flowers. The blues and oranges are singing.

  4. HI Mise,
Your home is beautiful and so full of colour ..... mine is the opposite .... mostly 'greige' !! My friend, who is a potter, has a house just like yours. So eclectic, colourful and fun. Marie's shop sounds right up my street so I'm off to have a look.
Have a good week Mise. XXXX

    1. Hi Karena! You beat together 4 oz sugar and 4 eggs in a mixer (whisk attachment), fold in 4 oz sieved flour, and divide among 2 lined round tins, then place in a 200C oven, lower it to 180C, and leave till slightly brown.

  9. You just casually drop in to the mix that your house has been featured in Ideal Homes and then carry on as though it's no big deal! Your home looks so bright and airy and colourful and very clean and tidy in the photos - is this perfection what it normally looks like?

    1. I tidy my many trophies and medals out of the way when the cameras are here, Elaine, but otherwise that's what it looks like... Thanks for the kind words.

  10. That'll be my new favourite shop... if only I had money to spend- I'm wanting a new footstool/ coffee table thing. May I borrow yours next time I'm round?

    1. But you haven't come round yet, Speccy, despite my writing to you every day to invite you. It is costing me a fortune in stamps.

  11. Love the ottoman but it wouldn't last five minutes in my house in that colour. Give me bright colours any day mostly to make the housework easier, hides the mess and stains I find.

  12. Mise... Such lovely photos... A bright and cheery beginning to our week! I hope you don't mind, but I used (linked) a quote from your post today on my offering for Jane's FITH. The online shop looks delightful... and the term "look book" is so awesome. Best wishes to Marie and her new venture! Sending good wishes for a pleasant week ..Susan

  14. Dr Ada here, dear Mise. I see that you have been entertaining visitors while I was away sunning myself on the Atlantic seaboard. I do so hope the visitors were suitably appreciative of your efforts: it wouldn't do to place such a magnificent sponge cake before the unworthy.

    1. They were more interested in my stone patio than the cake, Dr Ada. Heaven knows why.

  20. Natural Calico's merchandise is lovely, but I'd rather put shopping aside and have a slice of your cake.

  21. I really like your heated and shiny shades, in house and blossoms. The doldrums and lemon are doing.
