Happy birthday, Blue Daughter!

I'm still feeling a bit lightheaded from idly eating too much Dolly Mixture, that well-known aid to philosophical thought, at Blue Daughter's birthday party yesterday.

Since she could speak, Blue Daughter has sung "hee hee hee" merrily to herself as she plays, just like Billy Bunter. Pink Daughter seldom does this anymore. Somewhere between age three and age five, the "hee hee hee" receded.

[You must all be tired of my pink and white tablecloth by now.]

Pink Daughter was always a more anguished soul, taking after her dear Mamma, but she certainly used to giggle more when she was younger. Isn't socialisation a bother? I often think "hee hee hee" to myself as I write blog posts or make business phone calls, but I would certainly never admit to it, nor say it out loud. What would people think?

And the winner of the chocolate giveaway is Gigi - I'll be in touch.

  1. Never could tire of your pink tablecloth; especially when blue is the name of the game around here.

That cake is fantastic Mise. Did you do that? Many props on your creative genius.

  2. You can see the joy spreading over Blue daughters face as she creates her masterpiece. This is a precious gift that must continue to be nurtured, even in ourselves.

  3. Hello! I found your blog a little while ago but have been a silent person (most unlike me!) but have decided to find my voice (or my fingers) in order to say (or tap, gosh am getting confused) happy birthday to your Blue Daughter, and wow, what a nice birthday cake that looks!

Lovely blog by the way. And I often say 'hee hee hee' to myself as I am typing, although it's more of a mental giggle, in both ways. :)

  4. That cake looks amazing! And blue daughter looks very creative! I always think 'Hee hee ha' to myself, I think I picked it up from a toddler!

  5. Your cakes are inspiring me to buy something tasty.
I sing to myself as I potter along. Those in the area would undoubtedly prefer a few 'hee hee hee's
    Congratulations gigi!

  6. I said hee hee hee aloud when I realized that I'd won the giveaway! Then the hee hee hee turned to ha ha ha. I'm really excited to have won. I have thought about those chocolates far more times this week than I care to admit. I'll email you my address. Thank you so much, Mise!

Happy Birthday to Blue Daughter! That little snack cake train is brilliant--truly. I have no reason to suck up anymore, so you know I'm telling the truth. That would have been my favorite bd cake ever when I was a kid. xo Gigi

  7. Devon, bless you, I would have let an opportunity for bragging pass right by me had it not been for you. Yes, I made that cake. Is there a little False Modesty icon I can insert here?

Jayne, it's nice to meet you and I'm glad you emerged from your silence. Let me introduce Lilly and Speccy, fellow gigglers or singers, here by the liquor cabinet. You'll like them.

  8. mostly what I love about your blog is your consistent color palette of half-tone hues...not exactly pastels, not saturated hues...just a nice balance that speaks of peace and harmony at home. makes me smile. See? :)

  9. I like a bit of hee hee hee but I agree that societal pressures make it a silent one.

Cake is amazing, I thought it was a toy!

  10. Well done to Gigi and that train looks a work of art :-)
Twas a good night at the blog awards and an even better 'morning after'.

  11. Happy Birthday to Blue Daughter - may she "hee hee hee" loudly and proudly forever more.

  12. This is the first time I've seen the pink and white table cloth- how remiss of moi! What a cake- brings back Proustian memories of Woman's Weekly creations in the seventies, but with what a post-modern twist! I randomly found a blog called Alan in Belfast this weekend, and he too is nominated for the Irish blog awards- when do we hear that you've won?

  13. I'm sorry to have missed you, Lorna, I was looking forward to meeting yourself and Stan (Sentence First) and Annie (world-famous Annie), but the day overtook me - not having made the longlist, I hadn't scheduled for making the shortlist but wonders never cease. I'm glad you had a good time!

  14. happy 3rd birthday to the little peach that is blue daughter and what a delicious work of art that cake is. You truly are a yummy mummy

I too lament the passing of the hee hee hee's and the joyful oblivious humming whilst eating and the skipping ... not the skipping with ropes , but the walking along happily that suddenly breaks into a kind of bouncing along...Will you promise me you'll skip somewhere today.

  19. Happy birthday, Blue Daughter!! I see now why my glamorous social event invitations keep getting lost in the mail ~ far too many public Hee Hees from me, I'm afraid.

And that is a very fine train, Mise. I'm glad you had some chocolate left over for Gigi.

  20. Actually I often imagine you saying hee hee hee to yourself as you write your posts, and I certainly say it as I read them.
My two girls are the same - the older one far more self-conscious now, whereas my 6 year old has no such qualms.

  21. We have a wee Billy Bunter too, or two. It's those hee hee hee's that keep your heart twanging like a banjo full of joy! And yes they get older and more subtle, and it takes concentration and cleverness to figure out what it has morphed into. :-)

(Ps. re Blog awards? You shoulda won...)

  22. Thanks, Ciara! I always think myself that I should win everything, but that's just hubris, or, in the case of the Lottery, wishful thinking.

  23. Happy Birthday Blue Daughter! May there be many more hee hee hee's to come in the future.

Bravo on the cake too. Masterful.

  24. Hee hee hee, blah blah blah... Yep. Socialization is tiresome sometimes. Good thing we have our minds to escape to.

And funny: it is Noah's birthday today and we celebrated it on Saturday..!

Happy birthday to Blue Daughter, too!! (I think the three year difference is quite perfect - girls are much more mature than boys. Noah still hee hee hees and blah blah blahs to himself and he is now six). ;)

    xoox,
    -maria

ps: And darn it. I missed the giveaway! (Boo hoo hoo - in my head, of course). Congratulations to Gigi!

  25. Let me start by giving out and saying that there was no need to post a photo of that cake and set the Birthday Cake bar so darn high!

And now that I've calmed down, pls wish Blue daughter a belated HB.

PS We've a similar occasion coming next weekend ... can I order one chocolate train cake please?

  26. Your daughters are adorable! I think I'll sing "hee hee hee" to myself today. I tried it and liked it. It made me smile. Thanks.

  27. That picture of blue is so very blue and her expression cracks me up.

I hee hee hee to myself often. People in grocery stores stare.

  28. Many, many happy returns to Blue Daughter. Birthdays are wonderful when you're a little person, aren't they ?
You are so good at baking, Mise.
The train cake is a triumph. XXXX

  31. Happy-hee-hee-hee Birthday, Blue Daughter. You are loved.

Amazing cake, Mise...quite simply another feat of culinary genius.

Speaking of culinary genius.... Is that an AGA in your kitchen? I have a not so secret fetish about AGA's...too many Jilly Cooper novels I suspect. Any chance you could dedicate a post to yours...or perhaps you could break out in verse? I don't think it would be overdoing it, do you? An Ode to the AGA perhaps? Meredy xo.

  32. Happy birthday Blue Daughter!
I have passed on this blog to my friend Val for inspiration. She kindly offered to make a birthday cake for me next month. Anything less than a train and I shall be gutted.

  33. I can't believe Gigi is the chocolate winner. I do hope you send her lots of the GnT one as that would be most civilised ;-) Then I could raise my glass at the same time as well!! Now - I have a blue daughter and a pink daughter too - as well as a green son but he's not Irish I promise you. Love the birthday cake and the pink table cloth - hehehe! YOu should say it on the phone, may make someone's day ;-)

  34. Your daughters are so co-ordinated! Blue daughter in blue pinny with blue paints, etc etc.

Did they decide the colour schemes for those shots all by themselves or was their a 'blogger stylist' at work?

It looks like you all had a pretty magical day :)

  35. What's wrong with a little hee, hee, hee out loud? Who am I kidding? I would keep that to myself as well.
I love your pink table cloth, and that train cake looks like heaven!

  41. Bah. These children are impossibly cute. How did you make 'em thus? I feel an affinity with Blue Daughter as a second-daughter-with-blue-tendencies myself. Should warn you that the hee hee hees may only get louder.

  42. Happy Belated Birthday to Blue Daughter! Your cake is a masterpiece, so talented you are!

As for the hee hee hee's I think I must have missed the memo on dropping them...or maybe I am just easily amused these days. heehee

  43. Hello Mise, a belated Happy Birthday to Blue daughter. What a pair of angelic beauties! Thanks for your visit to my Blog and your comment on Johnny Depp. I prefer him in my kitchen to Jane's. That has nothing to do with your lovely daughter's birthday however. Enjoy your weekend, Mise. xx
